Janeen Akins for Oakwood Village Ward 2 City Council

About me
I am a licensed social worker with nearly 25 years of experience dedicated to serving individuals, families and communities. I earned both my bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from the University of Akron and am currently pursuing a doctorate in social work with a concentration in administrative leadership at the University of Kentucky.

My advanced studies in administrative leadership have equipped me with valuable skills to navigate complex systems, develop thoughtful policies, and lead organizations toward meaningful change. Through my doctoral work, I have gained a comprehensive understanding of governance, program development, and data-driven decision-making— skills that are essential for effective political leadership.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work as a social worker for Summit County Children's Services, adoption agencies and the Cleveland Clinic. Currently, I serve as a Social Emotional Learning Interventionist at Carylwood Intermediate School. These roles have allowed me to advocate for children, families, support services, and address the systemic challenges facing our communities.

My commitment to social justice, education, and community service has inspired me to engage and sit on nonprofit boards, participate in leadership development programs, and be an active member of organizations such as the NAACP, National Association of Black Social Workers, Leadership Akron, and Junior League of Cleveland. I am also a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.

With a deep commitment to community well-being, I am dedicated to leveraging my extensive background in social work and leadership to drive impactful change. My goal is to inform policy development, implement sustainable programs, and ensure transparent and responsive leadership that truly meets the needs of our residents. Armed with experience and dedication, I am ready to serve and contribute positively to enhancing the quality of life in our communities for generations to come.

Why I'm Running
I am running for city council because I believe in the power of strong communities, equitable opportunities, and leadership that puts residents first. Working as a social worker, in several capacities, I have seen firsthand the challenges our children, families and communities face every day. I know that when we invest in our children, families and community resources, we build a stronger future for everyone.
Oakwood Village has been my home for nearly a decade, and I am deeply committed to its growth and success. I want to bring my experience in social work, advocacy, and leadership to the table to ensure that every resident has a voice in shaping our future. I am running to advocate for policies that uplift our schools, strengthen families, and community resources. I believe in leadership that is transparent, accountable, and truly represents the needs of the people
. Together, we can create lasting change and build a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Join me in this movement—because our community deserves leadership that listens, acts, and delivers results.
